Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi says that the Arab League has made a few mistakes for supporting the Syrian opposition by arming them by what the AL calls “self-defense” against the Syrian Regime’s attempts to control the rebellion. The Iranian Foreign Minister says that this can cost the League greatly in the long run. He states that the Syrian issue must be resolved logically, legally and according to international law.

Experts say that obviously, the arming of rebels in Syria would definitely increase the number of victims and casualties in the two-year civil war that had taken approximately 70,000 Syrian lives.

Iran’s fury and criticism draws upon having Syria’s National Coalition force, the official name of Syria’s opposition bloc, took the seat for Syria during the Arab League annual summit in Qatar, Doha. The league had allowed the Syrian National Coalition force to arm itself and the AL will provide all the means to “self-defense”, including weapons, to all opposition forces.

Recently, the regimes activities spread violence across Damascus as its enigmatic leader, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his wife appeared to enjoy their own civil lives. National television portrayed the country as having no trouble at all and that life continues “as-is”. International political thinktanks and Syrian political experts say that this is a sign that the Regime is slowly cracking.

Analysts worldwide continue to evaluate the status of Syria and its potential recovery time regardless of which side wins the conflict in the country. The 21-month conflict has claimed almost 60,000 casualties in the duration of the war. Around more than billions of dollars in damages can be estimated from the city bombings and property damage and destruction committed by both sides, according to UN Analysts. Based on existing economic “assets” analysts see that Syria’s growth may be slow, but problematic.

The trouble begins with its establishment of a government. The National Coalition Force, a unity forged by the United States and Arabia for rebels to find a common objective should they win against the regime, will be the ruling government based on democracy. While this new government will be receiving help from the western and Arab communities, investors would also be laying their stake in the government.

However, as much market and economy Syria had in the past, it is non-existent today as properties have become devastated with regime bombings to flush out rebels in many cities. Many small businesses were devastated and some established businesses and investors have made a run for their money in the past, leaving growth and expenditures of the government invested on war efforts.

Post-conflict trauma would also be a problem for many surviving Syrians. A day of mourning lays by the end of the conflict and people will need time to get back to their feet to do their daily business properly. The recovery route would be slow and will be met by resistance, especially the loyalists of the regime.

At Doha, Qatar on Sunday, the Syrian opposition leaders gathered and conversed with each other in the presence of United States and Arab League representatives. The U.S. and Arab states were clearly involved in the Syrian civil war and the atrocities committed by the Syrian regime against their citizens. However, the forces fighting against the government was yet to be united; they had no similar goals, no similar wants or needs. All the opposition did was fight against President Bashar al-Assad’s army to protect their people.

After the meeting in Qatar, the Qatar News Agency reported that the united groups of Syrian opposition is now called the National Coalition Force. The opposition group had two objectives in mind: to take over after Assad’s rule is over and establish a new government, and to ensure that no one from Assad’s government will take part in the new institution.

Currently, the Syrian civil war has taken at least 38,000 victims in its 20-month run. According to U.S. and Arab League officials, spontaneous violence must end and if not with dialogue, then all political foundations of the new government should be rooted firmly with proper values.

The appointed leader, an Imam in Damascus named Mouaz Al-Khatib, now calls on the world to recognize their objectives and activities in Syria. The National Coalition Force is the new “government-in-waiting” after Assad’s reign is finished. Backed by the United States and the Arab League, the National Coalition Force is now the new hope of Syria.

How the Middle East Might Be Affected By the Euro Zone Crisis

Why a Diplomatic Solution to the Syrian Crisis is the Only Possible Answer

The Kurds, The Christians, The Alawites and the Sunnis: Inside the Syrian Civil War

I’ve recently discussed about how the Syrian conflict might become a big collapse of Syrian society once the war escalates into sectarian violence. As with Lebanon, the Syrian war has affected sects in the country, killing at least 12 people and having 11 soldiers try to settle the issue with force.

The middle east is a country built with many tribes and sects, founded by caste and supports a patriarchal mode of society. With this culture and societal construct in place for more than hundreds of years, letting go of the conflicts between these sects can prove to be a problem. This is what happened with Lebanon’s 17-year civil war, which claimed thousands of lives. Apparently, in Syria, 20,000 have been reported to have been killed in the crossfire, most of them civilian casualties.

Again, because of the fighting, violence will only fuel more violence. The UN has finally re-assigned another envoy to Syria to handle the diplomatic mission.

Only through a diplomatic ending can the Syrian crisis truly find its end. If one side wins in the conflict, either rebel or regime, it’ll only be the same case. With the culture of Syria’s sects, biases, favors, politics and the violence can never end.

Aleppo Massacre Imminent: Why People Aren’t Acting

Hama Massacre Kills 200 People: Diplomacy Fails?

We all know that the Syrian Civil War started 16 months ago after a peaceful revolution ended up in bloodshed as the Assad Regime opened fire with live ammunition on protesters. Soon, the conflict escalated to violent attacks on civilian homes rumored to support the opposition. The conflict now escalated to armed attacks and skirmishes between Syrian rebel and regime fighters. Bombers, tanks and other heavy weapons are also included in the attacks.

The question is, can the conflict become sectarian? Iraq, after eliminating a Sunni-led monarchy that had lasted for years, had sectarian conflicts all over. The U.S. is powerless to act in the situation given that other countries, namely China and Russia, do not agree with western involvement with regimes that they do not desire. Syrian president Bashar al-Assad is part of the Alawite minority. Many sects fear his rule, yet alawites are given preferable treatment and Christians find themselves more at ease with having a small Islamic sect ruling the land. The kurds remain neutral regarding the situation as well.

However, Sunnis make most of the opposition and rebels. If the war escalates to a level of sectarianism, there may be more blood. Recent news state that U.N. Special Envoy to Syria Kofi Annan has resigned from his position over the failure of his six-point peace plan. Without Kofi Annan, we might see a bloodier Syria ending in conflict, deaths and repeating the cycle.

Hama Massacre Kills 200 People: Diplomacy Fails?

Syrian Pilots Found By American Vessel Nautilus

Recent news from inside Syria states that President Bashar Al Assad’s forces have bombarded the Syrian commercial capital of Aleppo with mortars and gunship fire to eliminate Syrian rebels in the area. Aleppo, a city with 2.5 million, has casualties of over 34 people. The Syrian opposition activists state that civilians are mostly casualties of the bombing.

The United States speculates a fully-armed assault against the rebels. They see the efforts of Assad as tank columns, helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft enter the scene. The full story can be read here.

The only concern I have is that why hasn’t the violence stopped? Has UN special envoy Kofi Annan’s six-point peace plan failed? Clearly, the motivation for all the violence in Syria is because of the hatred of each side for each other.

The new assault of Syrian President Assad shows that he intends to end the 16-month rebellion with force and bloodshed. However, rebel forces continue their attacks as well. In this case, the picture is fighting fire with fire.

The US is only allowed to provide support with non-lethal items such as communication equipment and medical supplies. Anybody who interferes with the situation might raise global political concerns.

But if you’re anticipating a massacre and you are only to observe, isn’t it more painful? The only question in my mind is that people are dying yet the fighting is still on-going.

Political parties in Syria do not realize that the civilians are the ones paying for all that they are doing. More and more people can die given the circumstances.

Clearly, a solution for the Syrian crisis is still far away. At this time, only through the shedding of blood will the entire crisis end.

Syrian Pilots Found By American Vessel Nautilus

A Feared Turkish Response to Syrian Bombing

The tension in Syria and Turkey, while at ease, remains at a shaky state. Today, the deep sea research vessel ‘Nautilus’, hailing from America, has aided the effort in searching for the bodies of the pilots before its actual mission to map out the entire Black Sea on July 7. While the Turkish government has been willing to use any military or private resources for the recovery of their pilot’s bodies.

The Phantom F-4 of Turkey, which was shot down by Syria for allegedly threatening the security of the country, fell into the Syrian seas. The ‘Nautilus’, around the Syrian waters during such times, hauled the wreckage and located the bodies of the two dead pilots.

The Nautilus is a vessel capable of mapping out an entire seabed and hauling heavy relics and wreckage for research study. It was designed to help map out the geological, biological, archeological and chemical properties of the undersea areas it is to travel. The Nautilus is led by Robert Ballard, the famed undersea explorer who discovered the remnants of the felled Titanic.

After the Syrian downing of the Turkish plane, the Turkish government decided to have the Nautilus perform the task. Given its specifications, it was designed to do the job perfectly, hauling heavy wreckage completely and hassle-free.

The dead pilots of the F-4 fighter, Gokhan Ertan and Hasan Huseyin Aksoy, were recovered Thursday by Turkish authorities. They are set for a military memorial ceremony in a Turkish base on Friday.

Turkey and Kurdish Skirmish: Is There a Resolution to All This?

The escalating violence on Syria has claimed many civilian lives. Syria itself is facing charges for war crimes if proven guilty for killing 49 children during their skirmish. Recently, the Syrian military had shot down a Phantom F4 from the Turkish military. Turkey Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Edrogan had called the attack a violation of international treaty and is seeking the help of NATO for bringing Syria’s actions to court.

A military response from Turkey might spark a war between the two countries. However, Syria’s situation is treated very seriously by the UN. In spite of the rebellion, it had failed diplomacy with Turkey, stating that they were only protecting the interest of their country. In my opinion, it was because any photo might come out of the rubble that might involve Syria into further war crimes. Turkey states that it never shot down any Syrian choppers that flew more over their aerial jurisdiction.

It was correct of Minister Edrogan to actually declare an official statement against Syria. Given the current situation of Syria, the UN Security Council suggests a joint government in Syria by which both factions see a shared future to finally end the conflict and resolve a greater threat in the wrath of Turkey.
